University of Iowa officials said Tuesday they are supporting the Iowa City Council's efforts to re-address the 21-only issue that was overwhelmingly rejected by voters more than two years ago. However, two of the referendum's biggest opponents in 2007 said Tuesday they think the council is going against the wishes of the public. The 21-only measure, which would have prevented anyone younger than 21 entering a bar after 10 p.m., was defeated by a 58-42 margin in the November 2007 city election.

I think it's very disrespectful as the council members don't honor the wishes of the voters   -Mike Porter

A strong majority of the City Council supports a 21-only ordinance for Iowa City bars, but few people expect the council to have the final say on the matter. The council Monday said it wants to vote later this month on an ordinance that would make it so only people 21 and older can be in bars at night. Currently, people 19 and older can get into bars.

And I would expect the vote (this time) to be the same as the first vote   -Leah Cohen

University of Iowa President Sally Mason spoke with the UI Staff Council Executive Committee — in closed session — about decisions facing the UI community. Tuesday's meeting highlighted issues about next year's fiscal budget, the Hancher/Voxman/Clapp relocation, the faculty research track review, and her upcoming meeting with the entire council in two weeks. Executive committee meetings with Mason, which have always been closed, are an opportunity for the committee to speak openly with the UI presiden

If the meeting is only advisory and it’s not mandatory that any decision be made, it’s likely that it has the right to be closed   -Frank LoMonte

"assistant" meaning pre-tenure, which in academia means job security -- she must balance a demand to support more students and perform well on an external research grant, which will boost her case for tenure and essential future grants. "It's just a really tough situation," Tymoczko said. "Do I spend more time helping the students, or do I spend my time making sure I will still have a job in two or three years?"

The University of Michigan continues to be a gold standard for quality public universities, but it comes at a price. State support for UM is expected to drop below 20 percent of its $1.45 billion education budget next year, said Phil Hanlon, UM vice provost for academic and budgetary affairs. Yet UM has managed to avoid cutting programs.

In terms of proportion, you could very effectively argue we are already there   -Sally Mason

Increasing retention is key for student success, and the university should implement programs to attract and keep more students, a university task force said on Monday. And more students means more tuition money for the cash-strapped institution. The Task Force on Undergraduate Education and Success plan aims to enroll 100 more students every year through 2014 and place each first-year student in a Living Learning Community.

It gave me a way to connect with first-year students and see what they were thinking   -Beth Ingram
